Complaint to Walkers
The following complaint has been sent to Walkers Crisps …
Dear Sir/Madam,
When your advert featuring different countries was first shown on TV, England got a brief mention – noticeably briefer than other countries mentioned.
I now find that England has now been removed altogether from your advert. Why is this?
I was offended by your decision to give England the briefest of mentions in your advert, I am even more offended now that you have cut my country out completely.
There are over 60m people living in the UK and 50m of them live in England. You might want to remember that when you set out to offend our country.

With every respect, isn’t this rather petty and pointless. Haven’t we got bigger issues to deal with like campaigning for an English Parliament? If the press found out the height of our grievances are packets of crisps then we would face plenty of ridicule. Scotland and Wales face far more cultural prejudice in Britain but seems to be staying with the big issues. I hope we can do the same.
May 25th, 2010 at 8:48 pmSteve,
May 26th, 2010 at 7:26 amAs usual what an earth are you talking about “Scotland and Wales face far more cultural predjudice in Britain”?
I normally shake my head when reading your comments and move on, not this time, prove to me that they face any sort of prejudice, I think rather it’s the case it’s we English that face prejudice.
I don’t think it’s petty that this is being raised at all, too many times ENGLAND is deliberately, by Government, the media and the all powerful supermarkets.
I now see that the Government is now to give the Scots an extra £160 to compensate them for the Olympic Games being held in London!
THERE I was THINKING THAT IT WAS GREAT BRITAIN HOLDING THE GAMES IN THE CAPITAL OF UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN!!!!!!!!
I take it no Scot will be competing!!!!!!!!!!
“I now see that the government is to give the Scots an extra £160 to compensate them for the Olympic Games being held in London”………I wish!!
May 26th, 2010 at 9:24 amSpot on Stuart Eels. At one time I traveled to and from Wales quite frequently, the prejudice against the English was unbelievable. In the end I told my boss that I was no longer prepared to go there again. Needless to say no one else wanted to go so we abandoned the work we did there. I worked for an International company so that tells you a lot. I’ve not been back there in twelve years and will never set foot in the country again. I doubt they will miss me so everyone is happy, me especially.
May 26th, 2010 at 2:24 pmYes LLB,
May 26th, 2010 at 3:00 pmMy mistake it’s £160 million, according to the BBC.
Bobby Boyce, let’s not go down that avenue again, I know there’s a lot of hostility from sections of people in Wales and Scotland but I try to rise above it whenever I’m in either country, if we don’t we are no better.
It’s the English who always face prejudice and I can’t beleive we the English have to pay other people compensation, so we can hold the Olympic Games in our own back yard. You could’nt make it up, even if it was a joke…
May 26th, 2010 at 3:03 pmYES!!! We do have bigger Issues, like campaiging for a English parlaiment but stating little points like this will be heard and they will become big Issues which will help our campaigne for a English parliament when more English people wake up to what is happening and what is going on…
May 26th, 2010 at 3:39 pmLets tell the British Gov, if they don,t beleive in useing the words Englang and English, then please don.t and stop asking for the ENGLISH TAXS from the English people who live in a country called England…
May 26th, 2010 at 3:55 pmBob , pray explain to me why the scottish taxpayers are paying good money to pay for an olympics in London, which will do the scottish taxpayers no good at all, are any of the olympic events being held in Scotland, are any new buildings being put up in Scotland for the olympics, are scottish people likely to get employment in the olympics. I work and pay taxes in England, I don’t agree with the olympics being held in London but at least the infrastructure will help people in the south east. The olympics are not called the UK olympics – there the London olympics.
May 26th, 2010 at 11:03 pmPerhaps the Scottish Parliament will use the money to go towards the Commonwealth Games which are being held in Glasgow in 2014 .. not called the Glasgow games , its the Commonwealth Games .
These events are normally named after the place which hosts them. Antwerp Olympics, Athens, Squaw Valley, Calgary, Beijing etc. Why the Commonwealth games don’t do the same is a mystery. But the World Cup seems to be named after the country so it’s all fairly inconsistent.
May 27th, 2010 at 11:06 amFunding is normally from a mixture of sources, National, Lottery and a fairly big slice (quite rightly) from London. I guess that the Commonwealth games will also receive national funding. But it begs the question as to why Wales or perhaps NI should not receive compensation. But if there is a loss of income from tourism to Scotland then I don’t have a major problem, the Scottish economy has to continue. So if there is a loss of revenue it would have to be made up in some other way I suppose. It is still the UK after all said and done.
Interestingly the first of what seems to be the modern Olympics was in the UK in Shropshire in 1850. Attempts were made in France many years before.
I’ve no doubt that someone will tear me to pieces if I’m wrong but as I understood it the Manchester Commonwealth Games were funded by the Lottery and SPORT ENGLAND. If that were the case then I would expect the Commonwealth Games due in Scotland to be funded in the same way.
May 27th, 2010 at 11:53 amScottish Olympians will be competing under the UK banner in London so I don’t see why Scotland should be “compensated”.
Many parts of England will not benefit at all from the 2012 Olympics, including the area that I live in but I don’t bemoan the fact that we won’t!
Mcfeagle…But they are not paying if they are getting compen. Were would you like the games to be held? as for me I don’t give a toss really, have it anywere else in Britian and give the English compen.
May 27th, 2010 at 12:56 pmThe modern Olympics were inspired by the Wenlock Olympian Games which were started by the local GP at the time, Dr William Penny Brookes. He saw the benefits of prevention rather than cure and saw it as a way of helping the town keep fit and healthy. The games continue to this day on the same playing fields in Much Wenlock.
I grew up in Wenlock and went to the William Brookes school and I can guarantee you that other than some incidental publicity from the mascot’s name, the town will not benefit financially from the games. The IOC won’t even allow the Olympic rings logo to be used on the signs as you enter the town.
Scotland is getting long term benefits from the London Olympics – some of the facilities are being dismantled and moved to Scotland after the games. One of which was an Olympic swimming pool I believe (not sure how you move a hole in the ground!) and some training facilities I believe are also being built in Scotland. Is it fair that Scotland should receive the benefit of these facilities but still claim a Barnett bung off the back of them because Alex the Salmon says they’re for the “English” Olympics?
May 27th, 2010 at 3:43 pmForget about Walkers crisps, the English Defence League is on the rampage again, which isn’t doing anything for our cause!
May 29th, 2010 at 7:49 amhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/may/28/english-defence-league-guardian-investigation
They are a depressing bunch, who seem to have a basic difficulty diferentiating between England and Britain.
May 29th, 2010 at 8:12 amIt was quite laughable however to see the UAF commenting on them. The UAF are just as bad. They are a front for the extreme left.
The most depressing thing is, no one in the last Government ever seemed to wonder why some English people are driven to the extremists, and there is no indication the Coalition Government will adress the situation either.
The Scotts will get their bung because the UK government thinks appeasement will keep them quiet.
May 29th, 2010 at 10:48 amThe problem with appeasement however is that whether it is appeasement of the Irish paramilitary groups, muslim extremists or rampant Jocks, it only works if there is an infinite capacity to keep on appeasing, because these people will always want more and more and more.
Are the English Defence League English? I met a fundumentalist Northern Irish Protestant on my last holiday, who was a member, who couldn’t understand why I wanted nothing to do with him! The recent TV investigation on them showed that they came from all over the UK.
May 30th, 2010 at 9:03 amI’m not driven to them Daggs, any chance to knock them I use.
thanx wonkostane your giving us a swimmingpool ,its ok weve got loads of them up here,
dont think you are correct here ,
the 160m is money that was take from the scots lottery budget being returned.
scotland isnt going to benifit from these games
May 30th, 2010 at 10:58 amThe ugly face of English nationalism which I hoped I would not see in my country. If the Daily Mail, which supported English fascism in the 1930s, is frightened of English extremism then things must be bad. I hope we can continue to work hard for a more inclusive English nationalism in time for the World Cup. It seems even English children are being recruited for racism, is there nothing these English fascists won’t do? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1282483/Children-draped-English-flags-fascist-protest-march-Newcastle.html
May 30th, 2010 at 11:46 amEnglishbob, you may want to learn to spell and punctuate in english before you put the world to rights. After your performance against Algeria i thought nothing would make me laugh so much again until i saw your 1st post on here, cheers Bruce.
June 18th, 2010 at 11:44 pmPS,you may like to moan a lot but your subjects do not get many replies.Perhaps you are being ever so slightly petty?
Stuarteels (Note the Scottish spelling of Stuart – nice one mate) said
‘ I take it no Scot will be competing!!!!!!!!!!’
I’d imagine that Chris Hoy (3 x Gold medalist Beijing 2008), Ross Edgar (Silver Medalist, Beijing, 2008) , Katherine Grainger (Silver, Beijing 2008) and David Florence (Bronze, beijing 2008) will all be proud to compete and represent “Great” Britian in London in 2012, unless of course the CEP achieve their goals and are left to fend for themselves with few natural resources and means of funding themselves without raping the assets of her sister nations.
Good luck with the campaign. All that oil money will come in handy, the kids need new kilts!
