Let’s get this straight right now – I do not support English Votes on English Laws. It’s an insult to our nation and a constitutional fudge that is doomed to failure.
It is, however, a recognition of more than a decade of institutional discrimination against England at the hands of the British establishment and the need for English affairs to be managed by English politicians elected by, and accountable to, the people of England. It will also inevitably lead to an English Parliament when the impracticality and inherent flaws in the system are shown up publicly.
To that end, I would encourage you to vote for the Power 2010 pledge on English Votes on English Laws. It is currently in 4th place but it’s still too close for comfort. Power 2010 and various other lobby groups associated with the Rowntree Trust will lobby every MP and PPC with the top 5 pledges as voted for by the public in the run-up to the election.

To have EVoELs in the top 5 will at least force POWER 2010 to put the English Question on their agenda. I still believe that they will some way try and get it off the agenda. It will be interesting to see how they deal with what is obviously an issue they would rather not deal with! If they fudge it in the same way they fudged the English Parliament votes then we will have proof that their definition of democracy does not match ours.
February 20th, 2010 at 10:26 pmNew Labour and the Lib SDems will presumably just ignore the findings in the same way that they continue to say that there is no appetite for an English Parliament ignoring the polls. The Tories will say they already have a policy of EV’s.
Yes Derek, I agree but every step no matter how small is a plus, the fact that the Tories seek to change EVoEM, shows them in their true colours. WHAT WE THE MEMBERS OF THE CEP NEED TO DO IS ATTEND EVERY MEETING OF CANDIDATES AND EMBARRASS EVERY CANDIDATE FROM THE MAIN PARTIES! If we don’t make the effort we canblame no one except ourselves!
February 21st, 2010 at 2:48 pmPOWER are saying that the voting results will be released tomorrow (24.2.10).
Why can’t we have them now? I hope they are not using the 24 hours to apply ‘ratings’ and analyse (fudge) the results. Whats the betting EVoELs is not in the top 5?
February 23rd, 2010 at 8:18 amYup, I agree Derek.
There has been a “live” list showing the popularity of each proposal. EVoEL was fourth in that list with 10 seconds of polling to go.
Why does it take two days to publish what was plain for all to see, once polling was closed?
