Welsh NHS can’t afford new kidney drugs

The Welsh Assembly is using guidance issued by the “National” Institute for Clinicial Excellence (NICE) – an English-only quango – as an excuse to deny expensive kidney drugs to Welsh patients.
Clinical decisions issued by NICE only apply to England but the Welsh government usually chooses to follow their advice.
NICE has decided not to approve Avastin, [...]

Scottish Parliament to debate independence referendum

The Scottish Parliament will be debating an independence referendum bill in the next parliamentary year (a parliamentary year is a lot shorter than a normal year to accommodate their 2 and a half month long summer holiday).
The Deputy First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, says that they expect the die-hard unionists in the Scottish Parliament to oppose [...]

It Asda be a mistake, surely?

I saw an advert on TV for Asda the other day advertising sausages.
The images of the packaging in the top left of the screen showed Scottish and British sausages (including Scottish Lincolnshire sausages – isn’t Lincolnshire in England?).
I’ve emailed Asda asking if they could please explain where the “British” sausages are from and why they [...]

Vernon Bogdanor: Clueless

Professor Vernon Bogdanor has published a new book called The New British Constitution.
In the book he argues that the Conservative Party’s English Votes on English Laws (EVoEL) proposal for England is “batty” and that “few in England want an English Parliament”.
Bogdanor is at his best on the subject of “English votes for English laws”, one [...]

The Sun: Who will speak up for the English?

Gordon Brown is a liar and a coward. He might be telling a half truth by saying he had nothing to do with the Lockerbie bomber.
But the facts are that he, Blair and New Labour have created a disunited Kingdom where political lightweights and chancers like Alex Salmond can strut on the world political stage.
The [...]

English animation industry can’t compete

English animation company, Blue-Zoo, has released an animation as part a campaign to secure tax breaks for the English animation industry.
The voiceover in the animation, which features their main character in Cross of St George colours, explains that English animation companies can’t compete with foreign firms that receive tax breaks from their governments.  It points [...]

If an English team, why not an English parliament?

If an English team, why not an English parliament?
‘Few things bring home the glaring injustice being done to the English nation more than a sporting triumph like the Ashes win.’ Tom Jackson, a long serving member of the CEP National Council and for years its secretary, has sent this message by email to Camaign members [...]

Boycott Scotland if you wish but leave England alone

The release of the Lockerbie bomber, al-Megrahi, by the Scottish justice secretary has attracted criticism from all quarters.
Al-Megrahi was released by Kenny MacAskill MSP on compassionate grounds after being diagnosed with terminal prostrate cancer and returned to his native Libya.
The decision to release al-Megrahi was one of compassion and not something to which you can [...]

A startling discovery?

Phillip Dunne, the Tory MP for Ludlow in Shropshire, is demanding that the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) come clean about plans to revalue houses in England for council tax.
Mr Dunne has “discovered” that the VOA has been training up valuers and has been covertly inspecting and cataloguing properties in England for valuation purposes.  Presumably he [...]
