Royal Oak Day 2009

The following is a press release from www.royaloakday.org.uk
In the past few weeks parliament has faced a level of upheaval not seen for more than 300 years. Outrage at MPs expense claims should remind us that politicians exist to serve the people – not the other way around. But those calling for the ‘Spirit of Cromwell’ [...]

How do we restore the reputation of Parliament?

Tony Benn has a good suggestion:
We also need to introduce a federal system, so that English MPs are deciding rules for English constituencies. Why should English people be governed by the opinions of politicians from Scottish constituencies? Changing that would have to be part of electoral reform.

David Cameron’s plans are ‘complete nonsense’

The Scotsman (Cameron’s plans to cut number of MPs could backfire for Scottish Tories) points out that Cameron’s plan to cut the number of Westminster MPs could backfire spectacularly leaving him with no Scottish MPs and, presumably, no Scots in cabinet.
A PROPOSAL by David Cameron to cut the number of MPs at Westminster could make [...]

Gordon Brown will consider an English Parliament

In an article in today’s Independenent Gordon Brown has suggested that he will consider an English parliament.
Gordon Brown, Prime Minister: I’ll consider anything that makes the political elite accountable to citizens….we must look at new ways in which the political elites can be made accountable to serve more effectively the single most important person in [...]

Two lone voices

I’ve only heard two voices calling for an English parliament in relation to the present ‘constitutional crisis’. They are Anthony Barnett on Newsnight Scotland and William Rees-Mogg in the Daily Mail:
Britain is looking increasingly like a federal state; it would be possible to have a senate as a federal house for the United Kingdom. [...]

Justice Committee: No English Parliament

Under the rash of stories about fraudulent and unethical British politicians you could be forgiven for missing yesterday’s Justice Committee report: ‘Devolution: A Decade On’.
Unlike Charlie Falconer the Justice Committee didn’t go quite as far as to say ‘not today, not tomorrow, not in any kind of future we can see now’ but it does [...]

Populus: Anniversary of Devolution

Populus have now released details of their ‘Anniversary of Devolution‘ poll.
Previously I reported that an English Parliament was ‘more popular than Gordon Brown‘ based upon The Times’ report of the findings.
It now transipires that the question posed was this: “Comparing the situation now with the period before Scottish devolution, would you say that as a [...]

Panic on the Streets of Westminster

You may have read in the Guardian that Gorgeous George has blamed Speaker Martin’s fall from grace on English snobs:
English snobbery can do a morris dance of delight at the political demise of the Speaker, Michael Martin. The bigots have put the taigs back in their place.
Amongst those who signed Douglas Carswell’s petition for the [...]

Press Release: MPs resorting to the Nuremberg war trials defence

CEP: MPs resorting to the Nuremberg war trials defence
‘If ever there was a moment when we really could do with England starting again just like Scotland with its own parliament, and shedding all the inanities, the vanities and the corrupt practices of both past and present in the way we are governed, it is [...]
