Nobody wants an English Parliament?

I knew it was too good to be true when I started reading this article by Geoffrey Wheatcroft in the Guardian.
It started off so well, an explanation of the cynical, self-serving motivation of Labour’s devolution settlement to their Scottish and Welsh strongholds.  He touches on the disgraceful gerrymandering of English constituencies that allowed Labour to [...]

The Sun

From the Sun letters page:
What a wonderful by-election result for England in Glasgow. The Scots have shown the English it is all right to vote for your country.
Gordon Brown’s position is untenable as far as England is concerned. He should do the honourable thing and call a General Election.

Labour’s majority of 13,507 was overturned in Glasgow East yesterday by the SNP in what the SNP candidate described as “an epic win”.

Labour think tank says Britishness won’t unite us

The Joseph Rowntree Trust, a Labour think tank, has concluded that “a fixed notion of Britishness” will not help to unite the population of the dis-United Kingdom.
The report says that ideas like swearing allegiance to the Queen, Britishness lessons and a Britishness Day public holiday won’t help people feel British, making an arse out of [...]

Thinking the unthinkable

It’s taken a good 24 hours to get over the shock of being sent this link to a debate on Parliamentary Representation in England.
It is a momentous occassion in itself that the subject of democratic representation from the English perspective is discussed in Westminster but what makes this truly unbelievable is that it is a [...]

Commenting on the government’s House of Lords white paper a Campaign for an English Parliament spokesperson said:
“We have already witnessed botched attempts to reform the Lords. For one thing, the Lords is an absolutely necessary second chamber. It has become the bulwark of resistance to an over-powerful and overweening government [...]
