From the horses mouth
CEP Chairman, Scilla Cullen, recently wrote to Asda to ask why they were happy to sell produce bearing the Scottish and Welsh flags but anything English has the British flag on it.
The response was much the same as that previously encountered from Tesco and not entirely surprising. In a nutshell, if the English flag were put on items produced in England they wouldn’t sell in Scotland and Wales.
Ian Campbell, a member of the CEP National Council, wrote to Sainsbury’s asking much the same question and received the same response from Sainsbury’s – if English products were marked as English they wouldn’t sell in Scotland and Wales.
For years the British establishment have painted the English a group of nasty racists and bigots, linking English nationalism with groups like the National Front and the BNP whilst encouraging, promoting and even fueling nationalism in Scotland and Wales. Yet here we have the three largest supermarkets in the UK telling us that Scottish and Welsh people won’t buy English goods because they’re English but English people will buy Scottish and Welsh goods. Perhaps the British nationalists in the Labour Party have a different definition of bigot?

This situation is not new,it keeps turning up like a bad penny.
The disgraceful fact that the supermarkets even admit that this is the case is in itself racist and bigoted and could be construed as aiding and abetting Scottish and Welsh racism towards England, I would have thought this could be challenged in an English court of law.
We could of course take our own action by boycotting the guilty supermarkets, difficult I know, we are caught between a rock and a hard place, we have to shop for food somewhere, alternatively just don’t buy Scottish or Welsh products…Mmmmm…quite racist that though. Not in our nature to be so biggoted is it !!!!!.
Maybe we could ask for opinions on this by the Scots and Welsh contributers and let them tell us if they refuse to buy English products, its time for some straight honest talking, lets hear the truth.
Remember, no comment will tell us all we need to know.
June 20th, 2008 at 3:56 pmMaybe we should get in touch with Trev at whatever the CRE is called these days. At least it would broadcast the discrimination to a wider (85% of the UK) audience and let them know what they’re dealing with.
Can you post the actual letter?
June 22nd, 2008 at 8:13 pmPerhaps it might be an idea to write to these supermarkets informing them of a boycott in England of any goods with the Scottish or Welsh flags on. The supermarkets would soon see sense as the English market is nearly eight times as large.

Further to my blog above, it has indeed told us all we need to know.
Not one celt has had the courage to reply.
Why the hell we bother at all is beyond me, we know we are only going to be called racist whenever we stand up for our English rights.
Personaly I’ve had enough, we are going to shop with any small local independent store we can from now on, thats if we can find one !

June 27th, 2009 at 9:56 am[...] There are indications that the major supermarkets have refused to brand English products as English to appease anti-English Scots’ bigots. Read the CEP’s findings here. [...]
June 27th, 2009 at 1:46 pmApart from keeping the political pressure on it seems like there’s only one thing to do at the moment.
1) Don’t buy anything Scottish or Welsh.
2) But only English produce where possible.
3) If unsure then buy it unless you can get it elsewhere with English provenance.
There are 50 million people in England. If even a relatively small number of people do this it will show up on their statistics. Appeal to the supermarkets God, which as most people know is money. If we do nothing then we will continue to be disadvantaged.
August 8th, 2009 at 9:49 pmWhat a load of rubbish !
August 9th, 2009 at 4:53 pmThe large super-markets just care about ONE thing – PROFIT, they are not a social organisation, not really interested in your welfare, they just want the dosh out of your profit and to give as little of it as possible back to the producers. They are not interested in nations just money.
When I feel like it I do buy Scots goods, other time I buy English goods – it depends what I want. If I want Cullen Skink, guess what I buy scottish cullen skink, if I want tablet, I buy scottish tablet – neither of which are made in England, we do have some cultural differences and I do buy accordingly. Example – Black pudding – English ( usually Lancashire ) has lumps of fat in it and less oatmeal than Scottish – I prefer the scottish black pudding . I also like red pudding which I can get in Fife but not in the west of Scotland .
I happen to live in East Anglia and most of my produce is bought from within 20 miles of where I live but if I fancy some oaty stuff its usually scottish .
Slainge Mhor (or good health depending on which side of the border that youre from )

August 31st, 2009 at 12:30 pmMcfeagle its great that you can speak for the supermarkets by yourself, so why don’t you ask them to replace the saltire on every single supermatket Scottish good with the union jack?
August 31st, 2009 at 7:35 pmI thought I was the only person who had an issue with this. I was in a Cardiff Asda last week and I noticed English Cheddar next to Welsh Cheddar. What struck me was the absence of your flag. My friend and I were wondering why the hell the Welsh flag was used for the Welsh Cheddar but the Union Flag for the English one. We then noticed the same on the Westcountry Cheddar (the best kind by the way) and it suffered the same discrimination.
Well, with us both being Welsh, we decided to make a point about the obvious discrimination toward the English. We were told, ‘well, the Welsh won’t buy it if they know it is English’. WHAT???? HELLO you dumb b****! We just roared with laughter. I was like, well we Welsh must be real stupid if we can only tell it is English by seeing the St George on it – hello! The word English kind of gives it away and if we see the Union Flag we know it is from England anyway but we still buy it. Well, I enjoyed my Westcountry (English) Cheddar, thank you very much, LOL!
It is sad but true that xenophobia against the English is still very real in Wales, even in Cardiff. This may sound awful coming from a Welsh person but small and inferior places always trash bigger and better – look how many speak about the USA but do they care? You English are better than this cr*p. I think you need to get an English PM next time who actually cares about your interests – SERIOUSLY! I also support England 100% in getting their own government. The English make up the largest portion of the UK population, which should empower you to kick back – there are more of you than the rest of us – FACT! In Wales our flag is everyplace you go but I have noticed in England it is not that common to see the St George and I personally think it is a nice flag and should be flown all over England.
England, stop being guilty, ashamed or embarrassed and tell the rest of us to go **** ourselves if we do not like it.
All the best to you
