CEP: Simon Hughes leading Lib-Dem MP calls for an English first minister and English executive
Speaking at the open National Conference of the Campaign for an English Parliament on Saturday April 26th in the Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, Holborn London WC1 the Liberal Democrat MP for Bermondsey Simon Hughes called for England to have its own First Minister and its own Executive for the purpose of devolving to England power over its own internal affairs.
‘The most recent opinion polls taken in England have shown that there is overwhelming majority support for change in the way England is governed,’ stated Mr Hughes to an audience of 200 people who were attending the conference from all across England. ‘Only one third of English people interviewed expressed satisfaction with the way England is governed at present following upon devolution for Scotland and Wales. 66%, almost exactly, of people interviewed find it totally objectionable that Scottish and Welsh MPs in Westminster can vote on legislation for English internal affairs like education while no English MPs can vote on the internal affairs of Scotland and Wales. They want English affairs to be dealt with by England only, either by an English Parliament or by English MPs in Westminster devoting 2 days a week to English matters.
In either case there will have to be a First Minister for England together with an English Executive which will implment English legislation.’
