Campaign for an English Parliament

CEP News Blog

It is with sadness that we learn that Lord Beaumont of Whitley has passed away.  Lord Beaumont joined the Campaign for an English Parliament after attending the House of Lords seminar in June 2005 and has been a proponent of English devolution ever since.

Former CEP Deputy Chairman, Tom Waterhouse, said:

I was on a panel with Robert Hazell who’d said that an English Parliament would be “another form of London dominance”.  Lord Beaumont asked me whether an English Parliament would have to be in London, to which I replied that it could be based anywhere in England, perhaps Birmingham or Manchester. With that he went to the back of the room, picked up one of our leaflets and said “Right- I’m joining!”.

I remember that he came to the English Constitutional Convention the following year.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to Lord Beaumont’s family and friends.
