CEP calls for abolition of Barnett Formula by Chancellor in the budget
The Campaign for an English Parliament has called upon the Chancellor to include the abolition of the Barnett Formula in the Budget due out next week.
The Formula is a device by which the Government spends £1500 less per head every year on the people of England on education, health and social services than it does on each person in Scotland, Wales and NI, not for reasons of need but on grounds of nationality only -being Scottish, Welsh and NI. It costs each English taxpayer £281 pa extra in taxation. The government justifies it saying ‘It is a price worth paying to keep the Welsh, Scottish and NI in the Union’ (Blair). Also every extra pound spent in England automatically triggers an additional 10.66% payout to Scotlandd (eg Crossrail gained an extra £500 million for Scotland). The Campaign calls for the Formula to be scrapped because it is blatantly unfair on the people of England which has huge areas of social need; and for everyone in the UK to be treated equally’.
